Tony Alamo Sr., former MGM Grand executive, passes away at 84

Antonio “Tony” Alamo Sr., former EVP and COO of the MGM Grand Las Vegas as well as President of the Mandalay Bay Resort Group, passed away at the age of 84 on October 2 according to his son and former Nevada Gaming Commission Chairman Tony Alamo Jr.
Alamo Sr. began his career at the Harrah’s Resort in Reno, Nevada as a janitor and coin room operator before slowly learning how to deal in craps and blackjack. Having moved his family to Las Vegas in 1974, Alamo Sr. was appointed to a Shift Manager position at Circus Circus Hotel & Casino before eventually working his way to the President role.
He officially retired in 2005 as SVP of Mandalay Resort Group, helping to construct the MGM Grand Las Vegas and Monte Carlo, which has since been converted to Park MGM.
Alamo Jr. also confirmed his father passed away due to ongoing complications from a number of diseases battled over the past five years, as a memorial service has been planned for October 18 in Las Vegas. His son stated Alamo Sr. was surrounded by close family at the time of his passing.

Clark County School District Superintendent Jhone Ebert described Alamo Sr. as a “passionate advocate” for freedom, integrity and education, having said, “We are saddened to hear of the passing of CCSD school namesake Tony Alamo.
“For more than 20 years, Tony Alamo Elementary School has served students in our community. Mr. Alamo was a big supporter of public education and his legacy will live on through the work focused on student achievement happening every day at the school campus that bears his name.”
Alamo Sr. made several donations to scholarships at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and was a motivational speaker for the Hispanic Youth Leadership Conference held by the university.
