Seminole Gaming COO speaks out against ‘proliferation’ of illegal gambling operations

Key Points
- According to the statement, a raid performed by Cape Coral Police discovered slot machines which were rigged to payout at just 18%, compared to the state minimum of 85%
- Hoenemeyer also said the facilities “don’t pay taxes” and contribute “nothing” to the state of Florida and its Gaming Control Commission
Seminole Gaming COO David Hoenemeyer released a statement to Hard Rock International customers and eligible residents of Florida in regard to the dangers of participating in unlawful gambling operations throughout the state.
“You are one of our most valued Casino Guests and Unity Members, and we are reaching out to make you aware of extensive illegal gambling that is taking place in Florida. You may have seen news reports about the proliferation of gaming arcades, or slot parlors or internet cafes that have popped up in many parts of Florida,” Hoenemeyer said.
“Regardless of the term, they are all unlawful gambling operations, and they are a threat to everyone — not just the unsuspecting customers whom they attract. These facilities are illegal and unregulated. They don’t pay taxes and they prey on people who are unaware of their very real dangers. Numerous investigations have shown they often refuse pay out of jackpots to hapless customers. Many don’t even program their slot machines to deliver fair returns.”
According to the statement, a raid performed by Cape Coral Police discovered slot machines which were rigged to payout at just 18%, compared to the state minimum of 85%.
Good to know: The Florida Gaming Control Commission sent cease-and-desist letters to multiple overseas bookmakers and casinos on February 4 that were found to have been offering illegal wagers to residents of the state
Hoenemeyer continued: “The bogus slot machines confiscated in these raids and their illegal operators exist in direct violation of gaming laws of the State of Florida, which gets nothing from them.
“Furthermore, they are often venues for illegal drugs and even violent criminal activity, caused by thugs who take advantage of their lax security and infrequent police patrols to victimize customers. Studies show they aren’t safe. Not for you. Not for anyone.”
The Seminole Gaming executive also stated illegal gambling establishments survive due to the Florida Gaming Control Commission and local law enforcement still requiring the resources necessary to “permanently put them out of business.”
