BetMGM to require minimum wager amounts in Illinois beginning July 16

The operator will impose a minimum wager of $2.50 for Illinois users, while Hard Rock Bet announced a similar $2 minimum which is currently in effect.
Key Points
- Illinois lawmakers chose to pass a state budget in June 2025 that included a $0.25 per wager fee for the first 20m bets accepted by an operator and $0.50 for any wagers placed thereafter
- DraftKings, FanDuel and Fanatics Betting and Gaming all chose to enforce per wager transaction fees for Illinois residents as a result of the state’s budget decision
BetMGM and Hard Rock Bet will both impose minimum bet amounts in Illinois following state lawmakers’ decision to enforce a $0.25 fee for the first 20m bets accepted by an operator and $0.50 for all wagers placed thereafter.
Hard Rock Bet’s $2 minimum wager has already gone into effect for users in Illinois, while BetMGM sent a notice to consumers that its $2.50 minimum wager action will begin on July 16.
“Starting Wednesday, July 16, 2025, BetMGM will increase the minimum bet for all wagers to $2.50. The change will be applicable to all wager types – including, but not limited to, straight bets, parlays, Same Game Parlay and round robins,” BetMGM said within the release.
“This will also include bonus bets, bonuses, or any tokens having minimum bet requirement of $2.50. Should you have any questions, please reach out to our Customer Care team.”
The recent decisions from BetMGM and Hard Rock Bet follow similar action taken by DraftKings, FanDuel and Fanatics Betting and Gaming, which all announced a per wager transaction fee in response to the state budget being passed.
Good to know: BetMGM announced MLB Hall of Famer Derek Jeter will join its growing roster of brand ambassadors as part of a new multiyear partnership on July 14
DraftKings and FanDuel will impose a $0.50 per wager transaction fee due to the likelihood of each operator surpassing the 20m bet threshold, while Fanatics Betting and Gaming will enforce a $0.25 transaction fee for Illinois customers.
Each of the sports betting operators stated it would cease enforcing the transaction fees in Illinois should state lawmakers choose to rescind approval of the new state budget.
