Argentina: La Plata Racecourse expands cultural offerings with new public events

The Buenos Aires Provincial Lottery and the La Plata Racecourse have launched a new initiative to position the venue as a cultural destination.
Key Points
- The “Discover the Racecourse” campaign promotes concerts, outdoor events and tango nights alongside racing activities
- Winter holidays will include guided “Equestrian Experiences” in partnership with the local government
- The “Gran Premio Dardo Rocha,” the venue’s top racing event, will take place again in November
The Buenos Aires Provincial Lottery, together with the La Plata Racecourse, has launched a campaign to promote the venue as a cultural destination, inviting the public to discover the variety of activities it offers.
Under the slogan “Discover the Racecourse,” the initiative seeks to host concerts and different open-air events, in addition to traditional horse racing, open for families, groups and friends.
As part of the initiative, the La Plata Racecourse will host tango events featuring Radio Milonga, with free admission and a live broadcast on Radio Estación Sur’s YouTube channel. The program includes live music, dancing, and a dance class led by professional instructors.
For the winter holiday season, the racecourse is also collaborating with the local municipality to offer “Equestrian Experiences,” guided tours that highlight the venue’s historical and architectural significance.
Meanwhile, the “Noches Capitales” (Capital Nights) concert series continues to attract large audiences, with a lineup starting in September that includes performances by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Andrés Calamaro, Los Auténticos Decadentes, Babasónicos and Miranda!
In November, the “Gran Premio Dardo Rocha” will once again take place at the Racecourse. First run in 1915 and renamed in 1960 to honor the city’s founder, Dardo Rocha, this Group 1 thoroughbred race is held over 2,400 meters on dirt and remains the most prominent event on the venue’s calendar.
Good to know: The La Plata Racecourse supports approximately 60,000 workers in related industries and services behind the scenes
Gonzalo Atanasof, president of Lotería de la Provincia, said: “These initiatives are part of a broader plan to turn the racecourse into a year-round destination – a space for the community that goes beyond horse racing.”
This move follows the appointment of Fabián Rivero, a former jockey, as the new President of the Racing Commission at the La Plata Racetrack in Buenos Aires. The announcement was made by Gonzalo Atanasof, together with the racetrack’s administrator, Mariano Cowen, in early June 2025.
