Brazil SPA-MF suspends betting operators for failed cybersecurity assessments

Key Points
- A total of seven operators were given suspensions on May 30, including Bell Ventures Digital, EA Entertainment and Sports and Pixbet
- The decision aims to prevent these operators from offering bets, accepting deposits in Brazil and registering new bettors until proof of cybersecurity is demonstrated
The Brazil Secretariat of Prizes and Betting of the Ministry of Finance (SPA-MF) officially suspended the business of seven sports betting sites on May 30 for failing to provide proof of cybersecurity offerings within its operations.
The precautionary measures against authorized operators were applied for non-compliance with the obligation to deliver security assessment reports for betting systems, as required by federal regulation.
“The Secretariat of Prizes and Betting, of the Ministry of Finance, has adopted precautionary measures against each of the following betting operators and their respective betting sites and apps, in order to ensure the safety of bettors in the face of repeated non-compliance with the following regulatory requirements,” SPA-MF said.
“The suspension will last as long as there is no solution to the non-compliance. The absence of reports affects the safety of gamblers and the popular economy, the fight against money laundering and the collection of taxes and contributions. The measure affects all authorized websites of the company subject to the precautionary measure.”
Good to know: The Brazilian Senate’s Parliamentary Inquiry Commission approved measures on May 28 against digital influencer Luan Kovarik, also known as Jon Vlogs, owner of betting platform Jonbet, and businessman Jorge Barbosa Dias, owner of MarjoSports, after both failed to appear for scheduled testimony
Operators which saw its business suspended by SPA-MF include Bell Ventures Digital, EA Entertainment and Sports, Pixbet and Logame do Brasil.
The decision aims to prevent these operators from offering bets, accepting deposits in Brazil and registering new bettors until proof of cybersecurity is demonstrated. Each of the operators were given 90 days from its respective date of authorization to send an evaluation report of the betting system, but failed to comply with regulators.
If the betting sites continue its failure to comply following the suspension, a daily fine of approximately $6,980 will be imposed.
