Michigan Gaming Control Board urges responsible betting for NCAA Championship

Key Points
- Michigan Gaming Control Board encourages residents to use only licensed, regulated platforms for NCAA Championship betting
- Legal operators in Michigan must partner with established casinos and meet strict regulatory requirements
- The MGCB recently took enforcement action against ten illegal offshore gambling sites
As the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Game approaches on 7 April, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is emphasizing the importance of responsible gambling practices and encouraging residents to use only legal, regulated betting platforms.
The regulatory body warns that offshore sites lack essential consumer protections and responsible gaming safeguards.
Henry Williams, Executive Director of the MGCB, stated: “As millions of fans gear up to watch the NCAA Championship, we want to remind Michigan residents to enjoy March Madness safely and legally by placing their bets on licensed platforms.
“Betting on illegal, offshore websites exposes you to risks such as fraud, unfair play and a lack of responsible gaming support.
“It’s critical that bettors use platforms regulated by the state to protect themselves and their personal information.”
Michigan’s regulated online gambling ecosystem operates under strict oversight, with sports betting companies required to partner with one of the state’s three commercial casinos or twelve federally recognized tribes operating Class III casinos.
These partnerships form the foundation of Michigan’s Lawful Sports Betting Act, designed to help ensure consumer protection while maintaining regulatory compliance.
Good to know: Licensed operators are required to implement a range of security measures, offer responsible gaming tools and undergo regular audits to ensure fair play
To help residents identify legitimate platforms, the MGCB recommends verifying licensing status through their official website.
The MGCB’s guidance comes shortly after the regulator issued cease-and-desist letters to ten offshore operators owned by Apex Dynamics in Belize for illegally offering casino-style games to Michigan residents.
