Senate committee votes down Georgia sports betting resolution

This would have greenlighted mobile and retail sports wagering.
Key Points
- If passed, SR 131 sports betting revenue would have a 20% tax
- Tax revenue would have been divided equally between counties throughout the state
Sports betting legislation in Georgia will not make it to the ballot, according to a Fox 5 local news report.
The State Senate’s Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee considered Senate Resolution 131 earlier this week. However, the resolution did not advance past the committee.
SR 131 would have legalized sports wagering both online and in person through the state’s casinos, with a 20% tax, according to the local news report.
The resolution’s sponsor, Senator Carden Summers told local news that tax revenue collected from the regulated market would have been equally divided between the state’s 159 counties under the new measure.
Mike Griffin, the public affairs representative with the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, shared his reaction to the vote with local news.
“I believe that was a victory because I saw Democrats and Republicans voting against this bill,” he said.
Griffin added that those opposed to the resolution were against it for more than one reason.
“You think about the mental health issues that are related to it. You think about the increase in addiction. You think about how up to a third of addicted gamblers are going to consider committing suicide.”
In related news, Hoosier gamblers will have to wait beyond this year’s legislative session for another chance at legalized iGaming.
Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston recently said proposed legislation to bring legal online gambling and online lottery games to Indiana “won’t move forward this legislative session,” according to an Indiana Capital Chronicle news report.
He told local news that House Bill 1432 is complex and has “a lot of different moving parts.”
Huston further commented, “And I think, you know, just trying to find something there was some consensus on, felt like it was a pretty tough spot to be.”
