William Hill’s D.C. sports betting app sees handle fall 9.5% in December

William Hill’s Washington D.C. sports betting handle dropped 9.5% between November and December, with the United Kingdom-based operator generating $12.4m in total handle last month.

That figure is a considerable drop from the $13.7m of handle William Hill brought in for November. 

William Hill is one of two licensed operators in the national capital. The other is GambetDC, which saw handle grow 10% month-to-month to $4.3m in December. 

William Hill is hoping its newly launched mobile sports betting app will grow wagers. The app went live in late December following approval from the D.C. Lottery. 

Prior to its mobile app launch, William Hill had to rely entirely on a temporary retail sportsbook located inside the Capitol One Arena box office. 

The new app is limited in scope: users must be within a two-block radius from the arena. 

William Hill will soon have intense competition in the District. 

BetMGM recently announced a partnership with the Washington Nationals which will include a BetMGM sportsbook near the Major League Baseball team’s stadium along the Capitol Riverfront. 

FanDuel is also soon joining the mix with a retail sportsbook at Audi Field, home of Major League Soccer’s D.C. United. 

William Hill already has partnerships with the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, Washington Mystics, who all play at Capitol One Arena. 

One thing all D.C. sportsbook operators have in common is a desire for fans to return to live sporting events, which should bring a rush of new customers who may not typically visit stadium-based sportsbooks.
