Virginia Lottery and VCPG remind adults to gift responsibly

The organizations want to ensure lottery players know that tickets are never an appropriate gift for anyone younger than 18.

Key points:

- The Lottery has produced a PSA entitled Bad Gift Ideas and is using social and paid media to help spread the message to residents

- 2024 marks the 17th consecutive year the Lottery has teamed with VCPG and many other lottery organizations

The Virginia Lottery and Virginia Council on Problem Gambling (VCPG) have teamed up to remind adults that lottery tickets are never an appropriate gift for anyone under the legal age during the 2024 holiday season.

The Lottery has also produced a public service announcement (PSA) entitled Bad Gift Ideas and is using social and paid media to help get the message across to Virginians.

“The Virginia Lottery is committed to presenting and marketing our games in the most responsible and ethical manner,” Virginia Lottery Executive Director Khalid Jones said.

“Our Gift Responsibly campaign is aimed at reminding Virginians to keep in mind the age of a recipient.”

This will be the 17th year that the Virginia Lottery has teamed up with VCPG, the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and many other lottery corporations around the globe to increase public awareness during the holiday season.

Good to know: The Virginia Lottery and VCPG collaborated in March during Problem Gambling Awareness Month

“We are proud to partner with the Virginia Lottery to remind adults that lottery tickets should never be given as gifts or stocking stuffers to children,” VCPG President Dr. Carolyn Hawley said.

“Underage gambling exposure can have a serious long-term impact on a young person’s life.”

In fiscal year 2024, the Lottery raised more than $934m for K-12 education, making up approximately 10% of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.
