Maryland sports wagering hits record contribution in September 2024

The results document the industry's highest monthly contribution to the state since the program's inception in December 2021.

Key points:

- Maryland’s sports wagering market generated a record $9.4m in contributions in September 2024

- This amount nearly tripled the contribution from September 2023

- The first quarter of FY2025 saw a total of $21.2m contributed to state education programs

September 2024 marked a milestone for Maryland’s sports wagering industry, driven by the kickoff of the 2024 football season. The state saw its highest-ever monthly contribution from sports betting, totaling $9.4m.

This contribution came from handle of $532.87m and aims to provide significant support to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which aids public education programs.

The $9.4m contribution nearly tripled the amount recorded in September 2023 ($3.2m). It also surpassed the previous record of $8.2m set in January 2024.

For the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2025 (July through September 2024), contributions to the state reached $21.2m – more than double the $9.1m contributed during the same period in FY2024.

This increase reflects the steady growth of the sports wagering market since the introduction of retail sportsbooks in December 2021 and the launch of mobile sports wagering in November 2022.

Good to know: Maryland’s sports wagering market currently includes 11 mobile platforms and 12 retail locations, a slight decrease from the previous year

Commenting on these results, Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin stated: “We’re encouraged that the sports wagering market continues to generate additional funding to support schools, and at the same time we also encourage everyone to be responsible about their betting.

“Mobile wagering apps have tools that allow you to set limits on your activity. If you bet, please enjoy it in moderation and leave room to simply have fun watching the games and being a sports fan.”

Since its launch, Maryland's sports wagering program has contributed a cumulative $109m to the Blueprint for Maryland's Future Fund and an additional $3.4m to the Problem Gambling Fund from expired prizes.

In related news, it was announced earlier this week that Maryland’s casinos have also seen growth, as demonstrated in the recent results for September 2024.
