The state's six privately owned casinos offer both slot machines and table games to residents and tourists.

Throughout the month of August, the state of Maryland reported $173.9m in total gaming revenue from the state’s six privately owned casinos. The reported total for the month of August represents a 7.8% year-over-year increase from the prior year period and was the ninth-best single-month total in the history of Maryland’s casino program which began in 2010.

Maryland’s casinos offer both slot machines and table games, with properties in the state including MGM National Harbor, Live! Casino & Hotel, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, Ocean Downs Casino, Hollywood Casino Perryville and Rocky Gap Casino Resort.

Casino gaming contributions to the state during August 2024 totaled just under $73.7m, an increase of 8.1% compared to August 2023. Contributions to the Education Trust Fund throughout the month were $53.1m, also increasing 8.1% compared to the prior year period.

Casino gaming revenues also support the communities and jurisdictions where the casinos are located, Maryland’s horse racing industry and small, minority- and women-owned businesses.

MGM National Harbor, Live! Casino & Hotel and Hollywood Casino were the only properties to see reported increases in gaming revenue year-over-year for August. MGM National Harbor reported just over $75m in gaming revenue for August 2024, an increase of 9.7% from the prior year period.

Live! Casino & Hotel reported an increase of $6.8m year-over-year for an August 2024 total of $61.9m, while Hollywood Casino saw an 8.7% increase from the prior year period for a reported total of $7.7m during August 2024.

Rocky Gap Casino saw the biggest decrease year-over-year for the month of August, albeit only a slight loss of 6.9% from the prior year period for a total of just over $5m in gaming revenue. Horseshoe Casino wasn’t far behind with a decrease of 6.4% from August 2023, reporting $14.4m in gaming revenue for August 2024.

Ocean Downs Casino Resort only decreased by 1.8% year-over-year, still managing to generate just under $9.9m during the month of August in 2024.

On August 9, the Maryland Lottery reported that the state's casino, daily fantasy sports (DFS) and sportsbook operators have contributed nearly $1.58bn to Maryland’s charitable causes during the fiscal year.

The state said this is the second-largest contribution total to date, nearly topping last year’s nearly $1.6bn figure.
