Mississippi lottery fans can expect a new lineup of games starting May 12. The state has partnered with Lotto America and will begin holding drawings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays following the official launch.
Players will have a chance to win a $2m progressive jackpot at $1 per play. The state will hold its first drawing on Monday, May 13.
Mississippi Lottery President Jeff Hewitt noted that player feedback played a large role in bringing these games to the state.
He said, “Lotto America is popular in many other states.
“As we noted player feedback, many players mentioned offering a draw-style game with a jackpot in between Match 5 and Powerball or Mega Millions. Lotto America is the perfect addition to our portfolio.”
In other state news, the Mississippi House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Trey Lamar has announced that a recent bill to allow a casino in Jackson will not move forward.
Prior to 2005, Mississippi law only permitted casino development over water. The laws on the books were amended, however, following the events of Hurricane Katrina. Damage to casino barges due to the storm caused lawmakers to revisit the prior stipulations.
Now casino development is allowed in areas that are “a short distance on shore.” This includes areas along the Mississippi and the Gulf Coast.
The state Gaming Commission has licensed 12 casinos on the Gulf Coast and another 14 along the Mississippi. The state is also home to three casinos that are not regulated by the state. Those are owned and operated by The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.
Despite killing the bill, Lamar encouraged casino advocates and potential investors by telling them not to give up.
