Nebraska Casinos Launch Petition Drive For Digital Sports Betting

Since Nebraska lawmakers have yet to legalize digital sports betting in the Cornhusker State, casinos continue to miss out on millions of dollars in tax revenue.
Nebraska Casinos Seek Digital Sports Betting Initiative
In response to the bill stalling out in the Nebraska Legislature, casinos are launching a petition to convince politicians to add the digital sports betting initiative and a constitutional amendment.
Casinos are also hoping to gain their share of tax revenue.
Language in the petition includes the tax rate being set at 20 percent, and a share of the tax revenue will be earmarked for property tax relief.
“We contributed $66 million in taxes last year between Lincoln and Omaha. This would probably be close to a hundred million dollars when you include mobile sports betting as well,” Warhorse Casino Government Director Lynne McNally told WOWT News.
In Nebraska, sports betting is exclusively available at four licensed brick-and-mortar facilities: WarHorse Casino in Lincoln, WarHorse Casino in Omaha, the Grand Island Casino Resort in Grand Island, and Caesars Sportsbook at Harrah’s Casino in Columbus.
State Residents Are Limited
Even if digital sports betting becomes law, residents would still be banned from betting on Nebraska sports teams when they play at home.
However, the petition and a constitutional amendment would be a step in the right direction.
“The CA is very simple it just says that you can take online wagers in affiliation with a licensed race track enclosure so that’s the CA real simple. The statute changes a few technical items we’re looking to go out in the field the next couple of weeks,” McNally said, per WOWT News.
“Single subject rule if you want to make changes to the statute you don’t have a choice you have to run two petitions.”
There are more than 30 states that allow sports betting via cell phones.
Iowa is one of those states, and McNally said millions of dollars are wagered from Nebraska gamblers who drive across the river to place their bets.
“We want to keep the money in Nebraska again that’s what we’d like to do,” she said.
