LV tributes organized for Tony Hsieh

Las Vegas businessman, philanthropist honored on Fremont Street.

Tony Hsieh, the former chief executive of Zappos and a philanthropist of downtown Las Vegas, was honored on Fremont Street Saturday night a day after his death.

Hsieh passed away Friday at age 46 due to injuries sustained in a Connecticut house fire earlier in the month.

Hsieh revitalized Las Vegas following the Great Recession of 2008, first by relocating his Zappos business to downtown and then by investing hundreds of millions of dollars in the Fremont Street area.

Derek Stevens, whose Circa brand operates three casinos Downtown, organized a Fremont Street tribute to Hsieh. Circa properties and the Fremont Street canopy displayed in memoriam images of Hsieh.

“We never got to see Act 2,” Stevens said according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.

The event drew dignitaries from across the Las Vegas community including Mayor Carolyn Goodman and her husband, former Mayor Oscar Goodman.

Though Hsieh did not participate in gaming operations, his contributions to downtown Las Vegas allowed for the region to expand rapidly over the previous decade.

Hsieh moved Zappos from San Francisco to Henderson in 2004 and then relocated to Downtown Las Vegas in 2013. Soon after, he launched the Downtown Project, a $350m investment in restaurants, nightlife and other small businesses.

Hsieh retired from Zappos in August.
