Iowa State’s Isaiah Lee leaves school due to gambling charges
The defensive lineman allegedly disguised his identity online in order to make bets, including wagers against his own team.
Iowa State football player Isaiah Lee has been charged with tampering with records in order to disguise his identity online for the purpose of betting on sports. A representative from the university confirmed that Lee left the football program this week as a result.
The allegations include betting on 12 Iowa State football games and a total of 115 bets for over $885. One bet in 2021 saw Lee wager against his own team, The Iowa State Cyclones, in a moneyline bet, however, the Cyclones won the game.
Other Iowa State football players Hunter Dekkers, Jirehl Brock, DeShawn Hanika and Jacob Remsburg were also charged as part of an investigation into gambling and record tampering within the program. Offensive lineman, Dodge Sauser, also left the program last week, making Lee the second player to do so.
Lee, Dekkers, Brock and Hanika could all be permanently banned by the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) as a result. Tampering charges are also punishable by fines and up to two years in prison.
Though he did not bet on Iowa State, Remsburg’s accusations include betting on both NCAA football and basketball games, which could lead to a half-year suspension. It has not been confirmed whether the other charged players will leave the school.
Iowa State Senior Athletics Director Nick Joos said in a statement, “Since becoming aware of potential NCAA eligibility issues related to sports wagering by several of our student-athletes, Iowa State University has been actively working to address these issues with the involved student-athletes.
“We will continue to support our student-athletes as our compliance staff works with the NCAA to sort out questions surrounding their future eligibility for athletics competition.”
