NFL suspends three players for violating gambling policy
A fourth player has also been suspended for six games of the 2023 season.
The NFL has suspended four players for violating the league’s gambling policy and three of the four have been suspended indefinitely.
Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry of the Indianapolis Colts, and free agent Demetrius Taylor, have been suspended indefinitely through the 2023 season for betting on NFL games in the 2022 season.
Meanwhile, the other player who has been suspended for betting on non-NFL sports at the club facility, Nicholas Petit-Frere of the Tennessee Titans, has been suspended for the team’s first six regular-season games of the 2023 season.
Although Petit-Frere will be able to participate in all of the team’s offseason and preseason activities including preseason games.
In a statement he posted on social media, Petit-Frere apologized while making clear his bets were legal under Tennessee law: “It is only being sanctioned because it occurred at the Titans facility.
“I have always strived in every stage of my life to follow the rules. Even after attending a league presentation, I was unaware about the specifics around placing bets from a team facility.”
The gambling policy prohibits anyone in the NFL from engaging in any form of gambling in any club or league facility or venue, including the practice facility, per the league.
Rodgers issued a statement on June 5 saying he takes “full responsibility” for his actions.
Berry, Rodgers and Taylor can petition for reinstatement at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
Speaking on the release of Rodgers and Berry, Chris Ballard, GM of the Colts commented, “We have made the following roster moves as a consequence of the determination that these players violated the league’s gambling policy.
“The integrity of the game is of the utmost importance. As an organization, we will continue to educate our players, coaches and staff on the policies in place and the significant consequences that may occur with violations.”
