Seneca Nation calls on public solidarity for ‘fair and equitable’ gaming compact
The current compact with the state of New York expires in December.
The Seneca Nation has called on the public to actively support its efforts in securing a “fair and equitable” gaming compact with the state of New York, according to an Olean Times Herald local report.
The Nation has organized several community events and said these will take place throughout this month. Seneca officials said the public can support the Tribe by signing letters that “encourage state leaders to come to an agreement with the Nation that ensures the continued operation of the Nation’s three casino properties in Salamanca, Buffalo and Niagara Falls.”
The first event will be held May 4 at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino. Those who attend will have a chance to sign support letters from 11AM to 3PM in the resort’s lobby.
Currently, the Nation holds a compact with the state of New York. However, the compact expires at the end of this year.
Seneca President Rickey Armstrong Sr. explained to the Times Herald the significance of finishing the compact and said he believes this should be a priority for state leaders.
He commented: “Now that the state’s leaders are completing their work on the state budget, no other issue can be more important and more impactful, especially here in Western New York, than finishing honest negotiations on a fair and equitable compact with the Seneca Nation.”
Armstrong went on to add that public support can play a key role in making sure the compact is properly renewed.
He said in closing: “The people of our region understand and appreciate what the Seneca Nation means to Western New York, and we are asking our neighbors and our guests to let New York officials know that they support us.”
