Pechanga Resort Casino holds its first Pow Wow in eight years
The weekend festival included tribal dances, fireworks, food and artwork for sale.
Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California recently held a Pow Wow as part of the destination’s annual tradition, according to a recent report from The Press-Enterprise. The three-day inter-tribal festival began with a fireworks show and included a Grand Entry ceremony that took place at Pechanga’s Summit Events Center.
Representatives of tribes throughout the country, as well as those from Canada, participated in the celebration with dances that reflected and honored each specific tribal culture. Tribe members donned traditional native dress during the festivities and danced to the beat of drums as part of a competitive exhibition.
The casino has not held its Pow Wow for the past eight years, according to the Press-Enterprise report. Guests and spectators were able to attend the festival at no charge, and the event was open to the public.
As part of the opening ceremony, Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians Chairman Mark Macarro took a moment to welcome the tribes and talk about the importance of re-launching the festival.
He said: “After eight years of not having a Pow Wow, you guys are helping us reestablish that tradition. It’s a humble honor to welcome you to our home and our homelands.”
Along with the dance exhibitions, guests of the events were able to enjoy tacos, burgers and funnel cakes. Frybread, a Native American specialty dish, was also served during the powwow as a dessert with cinnamon or honey, as well as in burger, taco and corndog variations.
Several artisan vendors sold an assortment of tribal items, including dreamcatchers, earrings, blankets, t-shirts and stickers during the festival as well.
