New York starts safeguarding training to prevent underage gambling

Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. wants the state to be ready for responsible iGaming betting.
New York Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. has emphasized that the state has a responsibility to ensure underage residents are unable to access any form of gambling. This comes as the Empire State looks at advancing iGaming betting next year.
Mobile sports betting is currently live in New York (despite an astronomical tax rate), but online casino is yet to be legalised and is only live in six US states right now.
Earlier this month, the New York State Gaming Commission’s Division of Lottery announced the launch of new training for Lottery retailers, reinforcing the importance of age verification and other best practices related to responsible gaming.
Addabbo Jr. commented: “I commend the Gaming Commission for introducing this new training for our Lottery retailers, because they are oftentimes the only defense against underage residents purchasing Lottery tickets.”
The senator also acts as the Chair of the NYS Senate Racing Gaming and Wagering Committee.
The training will involve learning how to recognize fake IDs and reviewing acceptable forms of identification. It will also include how to handle customers who do not present an acceptable form of ID and become hostile.
In May, New York became the first Lottery in the world to distribute scratch-off tickets featuring a QR or URL code providing customers with 24-hour access to problem gambling programs close to their location. It did so for its approximately 15,000 retailers.
Addabbo Jr. commented: “While we were working on the language for the mobile sports betting legislation, our team put in place safeguards to prevent underage gaming.
“By not allowing underage people to participate in mobile gaming, we are protecting minors from spending their money or their parents’ money on gambling, from potentially developing problem gaming habits, while protecting the integrity of gaming in the state.”
