Sycuan Band gives major donation to San Diego Symphony
Move is the latest in a two decade relationship.
The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation and Sycuan Casino Resort have flexed their philanthropic muscles by donating $1.1m to the San Diego Symphony, thereby participating in the Symphony’s The Future is HEAR campaign.
As a result of the gift, the Sycuan Community Plaza in Jacobs Park’s The Rady Shell was consecrated prior to the 2022 Conrad Prebys Opening Night Concert on June 24.
This gift marks the largest ever donation that a Southern California sovereign tribal nation has ever bestowed upon an arts and culture entity.
In total, the Future is HEAR campaign has raised $123.5m of its $125m goal.
Chairman of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation Cody Martinez had the following to comment on the gift: “We are honored to present this donation to the San Diego Symphony in support of its many local artistic community programs.
“Through the Kumeyaay spirit of giving, it is very important for us to invest in all aspects of our community, especially arts and culture. We are very proud of our longstanding partnership with the Symphony and look forward to being a part of the different musical events and experiences that they continue to bring to life for the San Diego community.”
The gift does not mark the first time the Sycuan tribe has been involved with the San Diego Symphony. Their involvement with one another goes back at least two decades and has included nearly $2m in donations.
The Sycuan Casino Resort is one of the top-draw casinos in the San Diego region, with a 12-story hotel tower, 300 guest rooms and 57 luxury suites. It began as the far more diminutive Bingo Palace in 1983.
