NBA modifies injury reporting requirements amid betting scandal
The league will also enhance its gambling education program, create new measures to protect players and staff from harassment and improve its ability to detect unusual betting activity.
Following a recent betting scandal involving NBA figures such as Miami Heat point guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and former player Damon Jones, the league has established new requirements for injury reporting status.
Teams will now submit injury reports on the day of each respective matchup between 11am and 1pm local time, as well as update the reports in 15-minute increments, rather than hourly as previously required.
Rozier, Billups and Jones were each involved in a 34-person arrest conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in October, and subsequently charged with federal indictments involving sports betting and allegedly rigged poker games.
Along with the new injury reporting requirements, the NBA will also enhance its gambling education program, create new measures to protect players, coaches and staff from sports betting harassment and improve its ability to detect unusual betting activity.
Prosecutors have accused Rozier and Jones of issuing non-public information regarding injuries to bettors, while Billups’ charges mainly stem from the poker indictment.
The NBA has also begun advocating for additional restrictions on prop bets, or wagers based upon an individual player’s performance, including limitations on “under” bets, the number of players offered by a sportsbook and eliminating bets that are determined by a single play.
“Core to the NBA’s position is that sports leagues should have control over the types of bets offered on their games,” a memo issued by the NBA stated.
“Because leagues currently do not have such control, any changes will need to be pursued via negotiation with sports betting operators, requests to state gaming regulators, legislative action, or some combination of these avenues.”
Currently, FanDuel and DraftKings serve as official gaming partners of the NBA, while 10 fellow sports betting operators have also formed partnerships with the Association.
