Brazil: Influencer investigated over alleged links to illegal betting scheme
Criminal investigation targets digital influencer accused of using online raffles to promote illegal gambling and launder money.
A digital influencer with over 100,000 followers from Bahia, a state in the northeast of Brazil, is under investigation for her alleged involvement in illegal gambling, fraud and money laundering.
The 46-year-old woman, known online as Lene Modas, was the target of two search and seizure warrants carried out by the national civil police in Vitória da Conquista, the state’s southwest region.
Authorities executed warrants at her high-end residence and her clothing store in the city center.
Investigators say that the influencer promoted illegal raffles and online prize draws on social media, allegedly supposed to promote her fashion business.
The clothing store is suspected of being used as a front to launder proceeds from illicit gambling activities.
During the operation, police seized four mobile phones, two computers and a tablet, all believed to contain digital evidence linked to the alleged scheme.
The court also ordered the freezing of the influencer’s bank accounts, investment portfolios and other assets pending further investigation.
The influencer allegedly ran the raffles on social media platforms, using her large following to attract participants while disguising the games as legitimate promotional giveaways.
According to police sources, the operation is part of a broader crackdown on unregulated gambling networks in the state, where similar cases have been linked to online raffles and digital betting scams.
The suspect has not yet been formally charged and the police investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not released her full name and her legal defence has not yet responded to the requests for comment.
