Brazil: Influencer sentenced to nearly 10 years for running illegal raffles

Brazilian influencer Kleber Rodrigues de Moraes, known as Klebim, has been sentenced to nine years and 11 months in prison for leading an illegal raffle scheme in the Federal District. 

The ruling, issued by the state’s Court of Justice, found him guilty of operating a criminal organization, laundering money and promoting games of chance without government authorization.

According to the national Civil Police, Klebim coordinated a network that generated over BR20m between 2020 and 2022 by selling raffle tickets for luxury cars through social media. 

The influencer allegedly used his online following to advertise unauthorised draws, encouraging users to buy tickets ranging from BR5 to BR50.

Authorities reported that proceeds from the scheme were used to acquire high-value assets, including imported cars and upscale properties, in an attempt to disguise the illicit origin of the funds. 

Police seized nine luxury vehicles in his property, among them a Ferrari and a Lamborghini, and blocked around BR10m across multiple bank accounts linked to suspects that allegedly took part in the scheme.

The Court also ordered the seizure of a mansion in a high-profile Brasília district, valued in millions, as part of efforts to recover assets tied to the operation.

Klebim had been responding to the case in freedom, following an earlier period under electronic monitoring. 

Nine additional defendants were also convicted for their participation in the same network, including one who was already serving a separate sentence for manslaughter.

Legal representatives for Klebim and his co-defendant announced their intention to appeal the decision.
