North Dakota set for sports betting launch as early as Wednesday

News comes as the American Gaming Association lists the state as live and legal.

North Dakota could join the ranks of sports betting certified states this week after the American Gaming Association (AGA) listed the region as live and legal. This decision could see sports betting launch in the Flickertail State as early as Wednesday.

While the decision could be pushed back to early 2022, depending on certain regulatory decisions, bettors will soon be able to place wagers on major sporting events throughout the country.

The state is yet to approve mobile and online sports betting, so to begin with, wagering will be available at the Dakota Nation Gaming Enterprise-operated Dakota Magic Casino, Hankinson. The property’s sportsbook is set to be named the Dakota Nation Sportsbook. 

Currently, 28 states, and Washington DC, allow for legal and regulated sports betting. North Dakota’s closest neighbor, South Dakota, imposes strict rules on its sports wagering market, only allowing gambling to occur in the historic town of Deadwood.

Dakota Magic Chief Marketing Officer Rojelio Rubio said: “In North Dakota, sports betting was negotiated prior and approved in the state gaming compact between the tribal nation and the state.

“It wasn’t until the Supreme Court ruling that Dakota Magic was able to jump at the opportunity to provide sports betting.”

The property’s sportsbook will look to Vegas for design inspiration according to Rubio, featuring a lounge with large televisions and wall-to-wall video screens. On mobile wagering, Rubio stated it could be discussed at “a later time.”
