Virginia Lottery reports $510.2m handle for August 2025, growth of 22.4%

The Virginia Lottery has reported the state’s sports wagering activity throughout August 2025, as bettors managed to generate a total handle of $510.2m across mobile and retail operations, equating to an increase of 22.4% year-over-year.
The vast majority of wagering activity witnessed in Virginia for August 2025 stemmed from mobile betting, as online operations accounted for nearly $506.3m of the total monthly handle, and just over $57.3m of the adjusted gross revenue produced by operators.
The $58.3m of total adjusted gross revenue generated by sports betting operators throughout August 2025 represents an increase of 66.6% from the prior year period, while the $938,895 in revenue produced from retail activity still equates to significant growth of 126.2%.
Mobile operators increased its revenue for August 2025 by 65.9%, and paid out nearly $444.4m in winnings to bettors throughout the period.
According to the Virginia Lottery, 10 operators reported positive adjusted gross revenues for August 2025, leading to $8.7m in tax payments made to the state’s General Fund and Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund.

State law places a 15% tax on each permit holder’s adjusted gross revenue for a specific monthly period, while the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund is administered by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
On September 15, the Virginia Lottery released the state’s casino activity throughout August 2025, as total casino revenue increased 34.5% to $84.8m, with each of the three properties which report to the regulator witnessing revenue growth from the prior year period.
