GSR breaks ground on new arena, represents largest capital investment in Reno history

Grand Sierra Resort (GSR) in Reno, Nevada has broken ground on its new $435m arena, part of a $1bn redevelopment project which also consists of a 2,800-space parking garage, new community ice center, a revamped Grand Bay aquatic golf facility and future housing and hotel expansion.
The $1bn redevelopment project represents the largest private capital investment in Reno’s history, as the new arena will serve as the future home of Nevada Men’s Basketball, designed to seat up to 10,000 guests upon completion.
“This groundbreaking signals a new era for northern Nevada and our University,” University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval said.
“When completed, the Grand Sierra Resort Arena will become our region’s most compelling entertainment and sports venue while providing Wolf Pack Athletics with a dazzling home court that will be second to none.”
Spanning 300,000 sq ft, the arena will feature premium hospitality clubs, suites and a fan-focused central plaza, expected to host approximately 95 events each year.
GSR Owner Alex Meruelo also spoke on the official groundbreaking, having said, “This project represents a transformative moment for Reno and northern Nevada.
“Our investment reflects not only our commitment to this community, but our belief in its future as a premier destination for sports, entertainment and hospitality.”

“This arena represents the kind of investment that propels Reno forward. It will serve as a source of civic pride and a catalyst for our city’s continued growth,” Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said.
GSR currently features nearly 2,000 rooms for guests and 200,000 sq ft of meeting space, serving as a minority-owned business certified by the Western Regional Minority Supplier Development Council.
