Washington State approves new tribal sports betting regulation
Licenses will now be issued to potential suppliers by the state’s Gambling Commission and tribal gaming agencies.
This week has seen the Washington State Gambling Commission vote to approve proposed sports wagering licensing rules. The unanimous vote will see the new regulations come into law on August 30, 2021.
From this date, licenses will be issued to operators and suppliers who have completed their applications. Furthermore, sports betting platforms must have a license approved by both the Gambling Commission and tribal gaming agencies before working with any of the 29 federally recognized tribes and their sportsbooks in Washington State.
Speaking on the decision, Washington State Gambling Commission chair Bud Sizemore said: “I am very grateful for all the hard work Commission staff put into getting these rules finalized since we reached agreements with our tribal regulatory partners in May. This ushers in a new era for regulated sports wagering in Washington State and Washington citizens will be able to access tribal sportsbooks of the highest integrity in the near future.”
Washington became the 21st state to approve sports betting laws in 2020 through The Gambling Act, which encompasses all sports betting regulations in the state. Currently, 22 tribes own 29 land-based properties throughout the state. Sports betting is currently limited to tribal casinos.
Sizemore added: “My hope is that the completion of these licensing rules will allow us to work more closely with our tribal and national regulatory partners and local sports teams and leagues to better address the sports wagering black market so that we can continue to protect the public by keeping gambling legal and honest.”
