McCarran Airport reports 3.8m flyers in June
McCarran International Airport saw more than 3.8m flyers in June, signifying the increased travel to Las Vegas this summer.
Traffic at McCarran was up from 3.5m flyers in May but was still down 14.3% from the 4.4m visitors in June 2019, the last comparable.
June marked the first month of Las Vegas casinos returning to full capacity with no social distancing since the beginning of the pandemic.
Year to date, McCarran has seen 15.9m flyers compared to 25.2m flyers through the first six months of 2019.
Domestic flights accounted for 3.7m passengers in June, a 32.5% decrease from two years ago. International brought in 53,400 passengers, down 90.2% from 2019.
Southwest was responsible for 1.4m passengers, down just 6.3% from two years ago. Spirit was a distant second at 414,300 flyers, followed by Delta (388,000), America, (380,000), and Frontier (345,000).
Among international airlines, Volaris led the way with 24,000, followed by Vivaaerobus at 12,400 and Aeromexico at 8,800.
Passengers flying in to McCarran could soon be welcomed by a new airport name.
The international airport could be renamed after former US Nevada Senator Harry Reid as soon as September, Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The county commission unanimously voted to rename the airport after Reid earlier this year.
Other possible name changes include the Las Vegas International Airport or naming after famous Las Vegas residents like Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra.
The Federal Aviation Administration must revise the airport master record before the name change can become official.
