Melco Resorts & Entertainment Limited

Based in Hong Kong, Melco Resorts is a developer, owner and operator of integrated resorts with entertainment and casino gaming facilities in Asia and Europe.

Originally known as Melco Crown Entertainment, Melco Resorts was founded in 2004 as a joint venture between Melco International and Crown Limited. Melco Crown became Melco Resorts & Entertainment in 2017 and currently operates as a subsidiary of Melco International.

Melco Resorts is a truly international conglomerate, with a number of integrated casinos and resorts in Macau, a Mediterranean resort in construction in Cyprus and an onsen spa and ski resort in Japan.

Melco Resorts first approached James Packer’s Australian casino company Crown Limited in 2004 creating the joint venture Melco Crown Entertainment Limited. They planned to focus investment in Macau and in March 2006 they spent $900m to purchase six Macau gaming licenses from Wynn Resorts.

This purchase allowed them to operate an unlimited number of casinos, tables and machines in Macau until June 2022. They were subsequently listed on Nasdaq in December 2006 and launched the Altira Macau in 2007 for $1.45bn.

2012 marks its first project outside of Macau when Melco Crown partnered with SM Investments on the $1 billion casino resort City of Dreams Manila in the Philippines. Melco Crown invested $580 million and the casino resort opened in 2015.

Throughout the last decade, Melco has continued to look outside Macau, announcing its intention to invest at least $10bn in the newly opened Japanese market. In 2019, they became the official sponsor of Manchester City in Japan and also sponsored their sister club Yokohoma F Marinos.
