NY Senator wants racetracks to get equal reopening consideration
Empire State will allow casinos to up capacity to 50% on May 15.
A New York State Senator on Tuesday hailed Governor Andrew Cuomo’s decision to allow casinos to increase their visitor capacity, adding an appeal for horseracing facilities to likewise allow more fans.
As reported by Gaming America, Governor Cuomo (pictured) on Monday said the Empire State’s casinos will be able to boost their capacity limits to 50% from 25% starting May 15. Cuomo said the decline in Covid positivity rates combined with increasing vaccination numbers will allow for lifting of restrictions on businesses.
One day later, Senator Joseph Addabbo, Jr., a Democrat who serves as chairman of the state senate’s Committee on Racing, Gaming and Wagering, issued a statement on behalf of racetracks.
“Governor Cuomo’s announcement on Monday that casinos and other gaming facilities will be able to double their capacity from 25% to 50% starting on May 15 means we are on our way back to a sense of normality and economic recovery,” Addabbo said. “I applaud Governor Cuomo’s decision to follow the science and open up the state even further as our Covid-19 numbers continue to decrease and more residents are vaccinated. However, we cannot forget about our horse racing tracks in this decision. Racetracks are in open-air facilities and absolutely should be included in any kind of visitor expansion, just as with our baseball and other outdoor stadiums. I look forward to working with the governor and his staff on discussing further reopening standards for gaming facilities and our state’s racetracks.”
