AGCO removes more than 50 devices after province-wide sweep this summer

Key Points
- After discovering illegal equipment during its summer inspections, the AGCO removed more than 50 “prime slot” machines
- The regulator said these were in areas where minors and other vulnerable groups of people had access
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has affirmed its commitment to cracking down on illegal gaming machines throughout the region.
The regulator said it is now “is taking strong action to protect the public from unregulated gambling machines” and has released a report of its “significant enforcement results.”
Over the summer, the AGCO has removed more than 50 “prime slots” machines because following a recent province-wide sweep. The regulator inspected nearly 200 liquor-licensed and lottery retail establishments in July and August.
The AGCO removed these devices after discovering they had been operating unlawfully in convenience stores, restaurants and other locations.
The regulator said some of these locations were “accessible to minors and other vulnerable groups.”
AGCO Chief Executive Officer and Registrar Dr. Karin Schnarr further explained the regulator’s approach to combatting these types of illegal machines and activities.
Schnarr commented, “While other jurisdictions grapple with the entrenchment of these unlawful gaming machines, the AGCO has taken a proactive stance to ensure they do not take root here in Ontario.
“Our recent regulatory actions are a clear demonstration of our comprehensive approach and our long-term commitment.”
In related news, the AGCO recently amended its responsible gambling (RG) training program rules for lottery and casino employees.
Under the new standard, the Canadian regulator no longer requires Registrar approval for these RG training programs, effective immediately.
