Argentina: Rosario Government introduces anti-addiction initiative

The Rosario Council has partnered with local clubs for enhanced gambling addiction training.
Key Points
- The Rosario Government has implemented a new initiative to tackle addiction and youth gambling
- The project will see the council partner with local institutions to provide educative resources to help curb the issues of addiction and underage betting
The Municipal Council of Rosario, Argentina, has unveiled a new initiative in which the local Government has partnered with neighborhood sports institutions and local clubs to help tackle gambling addiction and youth betting issues.
Led by Councilor Julia Irigoitia, the project seeks to involve community leaders from sports organizations and clubs to take an active role in tackling addiction related to gambling, with an enhanced focus on the impact of youth online gambling exposure. Indeed, there are growing concerns across Latin America relating to the rising figures of underage gambling that have come hand-in-hand with the proliferation of online gaming in the region.
Specifically, this proposal seeks to help utilize local partnerships to identify early signs of gambling addiction and implement intervention protocols, as well as provide training to those involved with the youth – such as teachers, coaches or parents – to recognize and prevent risky situations for children.
This latest move comes following an additional responsible initiative launched in Mendoza, Argentina, which sought to promote financial education in schools amidst the growth of online betting in teenagers.
Good to know: In July, Argentina reported a rise in risky behaviors linked to compulsive gambling among minors
Commenting on the development, Councilor Julia Irigoitia said, “Last year we had already proposed updating the regulations that Rosario has to address this problem, adding the phenomenon of cyberpathic gambling, which deepened during the pandemic and mainly affects young people and adolescents.
“The idea is that those close to them, whom the children already trust, receive clear tools; knowing what to look at, what to say, where to go. At times, people don’t know what to do in the face of a warning sign, and that causes the problem to worsen. Platforms use sports idols to attract children and teenagers. That’s dangerous, because it confuses positive leadership with an incentive toward risky behavior.”
