NCAA releases three players after match-fixing investigation at Fresno and San Jose State

Key Points
- Three student athletes have been removed after it was discovered they were participating in a match-fixing ring
- They competed in men’s basketball at Fresno State and San Jose State
- There will be no fines issued to the men involved
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has completed its investigation into three student-athletes and subsequently released them from their teams.
The three men, Mykell Robinson, Steven Vasquez and Jalen Weaver, competed in men’s basketball at Fresno State and San Jose State.
The investigation found that they would bet on their own games and provide others with information to follow suit.
During the 2023/4 season, Robinson and Vasquez discussed via text messages that Robinson should underperform during one particular game.
Robinson, Vasquez and a third party were then paid out $15,950 after betting on this underperformance.
Robinson also placed 13 daily fantasy sports bets on himself during this time.
Good to know: Almost all cases of players who place bets on their own games under the NCAA face a permanent loss of eligibility
Vasquez and Robinson were also noted as not cooperating with the enforcement staff’s investigation into the matter.
Weaver, Robinson’s teammate who had been given information on what to bet on previously, did participate with the investigation and agreed to the violation in his case.
As the Committee on Infractions do not currently issue fines to student-athletes who violate NCAA rules, the three men will not have any penalty fees to pay for this matter.
Yesterday, the American Gaming Association (AGA) released its study on the public’s perception of prediction markets and sports event contracts.
Out of the 2,000+ people asked, 85% of them believed that sports event contracts should be classed as gambling.
