Vikand removes casino nicotine in Churchill Downs air quality test

The tests found that Vikand’s Pyure Technology removed nicotine from casino air and surfaces.
Key Points
- Churchill Downs, in partnership with The IEP Group, put Vikand’s Pyure Technology solution to the test at two of its properties
- Vikand hopes the test will prove the solution’s use to purify air on casino cruise ships
Maritime healthcare solutions company Vikand has provided its air quality system, Pyure Technology, to cruise ships in the US.
In partnership between Churchill Downs and The IEP Group, Pyure Technology was tested in two Churchill Downs properties – though not casino cruise ships, mind, but the Churchill Downs racetrack and Newport Racing & Gaming – to test the system’s impact on indoor air quality (IAQ).
Results found that, following use of the system, no nicotine could be detected on surfaces or in the air of the casinos. The high-traffic setting of a casino, it is argued, is comparable to that of a cruise ship, creating a use case for the technology on casino cruise ships in and out of the US. Indeed, the system was also shown to reduce bacteria in other areas, including a 93% reduction on bathroom handles, 90% on slot machines and 84% on ATM keypads, among others.
Good to know: Pyure is currently installed on 30 cruise ships across several fleets
On the tests, Vikand Technical Solutions Director Mattias Hallberg said, “In high-traffic, high-contact spaces like casinos, where air and surface quality are paramount, our solutions help cruise operators protect what matters most – the health and trust of their guests and crew.”
Pyure Scientific Officer Dr Connie Araps added, “Second-hand smoke contains thousands of harmful organic compounds that linger in the air and on surfaces. Pyure’s hydroxyl technology rapidly and safely breaks down these pollutants including nicotine, benzene and formaldehyde, restoring indoor air quality and giving cruise operators a scientifically proven way to improve safety and comfort for everyone onboard.”
The story comes as several bodies in the US attempt to ban smoking in casinos altogether. In January, the American Lung Association filed its 2025 State of Tobacco Control report, calling for New Jersey to amend its casino smoking policy. Lawmakers in Kansas and Missouri have also considered a ban.
