Celtics owner Steve Pagliuca shows interest in buying WNBA team from Mohegan

The team could move to Boston by 2027.
Key Points
- The team could possibly move to Boston in the next two years if the deal goes through
- Pagliuca has confirmed interest in the purchase but has not officially announced any sale
Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca has reportedly reached an agreement to buy the WNBA franchise from the Mohegan Tribe for $325m, according to a Boston Globe local report.
Should the deal reach conclusion, this could potentially be the highest purchase price for a women’s team, the local report said.
The transaction would be subject to approval from WNBA’s Board of Governors. Part of the agreement would involve purchasing the Connecticut Sun and moving the team to Boston into a new practice facility with a $100m price tag.
Though Pagliuca has confirmed he is interested in the venture, no formal plans have been made.
Should the team make the move, relocation could be expected to wrap up in 2027.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey told the Boston Globe she is open to the Sun making a home in Boston.
Healey commented, “I’ve been pushing for years for Boston to get a WNBA team; I think it would be great for Boston. And that would be great for the WNBA and we saw that for a second year in a row, a sellout crowd at TD Garden. I’ve been at this for a couple of years. I also think it would be great for the Connecticut Sun to move to Boston and represent all of New England.
“We are the hub of New England and the place that basketball was invented. I think it makes a lot of sense.”
Mohegan currently owns and manages entertainment resort properties in the United States and Canada. Its Canadian operators are based in Niagara Falls within the province of Ontario, but the company owns resorts in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
