Brazil collects nearly BR4bn in betting tax revenue in six months

Key Points
- Betting revenue reached BR3.87bn ($699m) in the first half of 2025

- Finance Minister Haddad has reiterated his stance for tighter regulation
Brazil’s Ministry of Finance has disclosed that online betting taxes brought in nearly BR4bn between January and June 2025.
According to reports by Receita Federal, the national revenue service, collected BR3.87bn in revenue, with June alone contributing BR780m, making it the highest single-month figure to date.
This revenue originates from the taxation of fixed-odds betting operations, which have surged in Brazil since regulation began to take effect.
While the Government initially projected slower returns during the implementation phase, actual figures have exceeded expectations.
“The regulation creates new opportunities to attract the interest of international operators, consolidating Brazil as one of the most relevant markets in the world,” says Leonardo Bessa, Consultant for the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association.
Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has maintained a critical stance on the sector, saying the sector would be completely banned from the country were the decision his alone.
Good to know: Brazil’s Finance Minister recently called for tougher taxation on online betting, saying the country can’t give these companies an easy ride
Haddad has expressed dissatisfaction with what he considered a lenient approach to the industry, especially in comparison to other sectors more heavily taxed.
He stated that “society should not be seduced” by betting platforms and reiterated that such activity should be subject to stricter rules.
