Cedar Crossing Casino project survives legal challenge

Key Points
- A legal challenge by Riverside Casino was defeated in court
- No appeals will be filed, according to the Cedar Rapids Mayor
An Iowa court decision to allow continued work on the Cedar Crossing Casino project in Cedar Rapids will not see an appeal process, according to a WHO Radio News report.
Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell recently posted on social media that Riverside Casino has decided not to challenge the ruling. Without an appeal, the Cedar Rapids project can move forward as planned.
Riverside Casino sought legal action against the project, claiming there was misleading language in a 2021 gaming referendum. The suit alleged that the Iowa Racing & Gaming Commission had no grounds to grant a license for the project because of the way the referendum was worded.
The estimated $275m casino development project was pitched by the Linn County Gaming Association and its partner Peninsula Pacific Entertainment.
According to the local report, the facility is expected to open on New Year’s Eve next year.
The completed destination will be home to a casino with 700 slot machines and 22 table games. The site would also feature a 1,500-seat entertainment venue, several restaurants, bars and an arts and cultural center.
Good to know: Until recently, the state had a two-year moratorium in place on new gaming licenses
However, the moratorium expired last July.
During the most recent legislative session, lawmakers advanced a bill to establish a new moratorium that would halt casino expansion until 2030.
Senate File 76 would also limit the number of gambling licenses that the state issues to 19.
The proposed legislation was brought to the Iowa General Assembly by the Committee on Ways and Means. It was later passed in the House by a vote of 68-31.
However, the bill did not advance any farther.
