A legislative proposal in the northeastern Brazilian state of Piauí aims to introduce gambling harm education in schools through a programme titled Fim de Jogo (“End of the Game”).
Authored by State Deputy Dr Hélio Oliveira, the bill seeks to raise awareness among children and teenagers about the physical, mental and social dangers of gambling and online betting.
If approved, the program would be managed by the state’s Department of Education and include the development of teaching materials on delicate topics such as sleep disorders, depression, social isolation and compulsive behavior.
The idea is to help students understand the impacts of gambling and, when they do come of age, are able to approach it with a full understanding of the potential consequences.
It also proposes lectures, campaigns and workshops, as well as specific training for educators to help identify signs of problematic tech use among students.
The bill highlights rising concerns over young people’s access to digital betting platforms and exposure to gambling content promoted by influencers, including underage personalities.

The initiative would allow for partnerships with health and psychology organizations to offer support to students and families, besides calling for annual evaluations of the program’s effectiveness in regards to young people.
It is currently under review by technical committees in the state legislature and, if passed, will proceed to approval by the state government.
