Colombia regulator to audit Medellín lottery after controversial jackpot win

Colombia’s National Council for Games of Luck and Chance (CNJSA) will conduct a special audit of the Medellín Lottery following public scrutiny over the latest draw.
This follows the awarding of the top prize of COP 16bn (approximately $4m) to Luisa Jaramillo, wife of Rubén Callejas, Deputy Manager of the Medellín Lottery.
The official broadcast of the draw announced almost immediately that someone had won the jackpot, which attracted attention regarding the timing of the announcement.
The draw in question was held in celebration of Mother’s Month. As part of its oversight responsibilities, the CNJSA will audit the process to clarify the conditions under which the draw was conducted.
A delegation from the CNJSA Technical Secretariat, led by Roberto Conde Romero, VP of Organizational Development and Technical Secretary of the CNJSA, will travel to Medellín with authorization from Coljuegos President Marco Emilio Hincapié Ramírez.
Good to know: So far, Callejas has not made any public statements regarding the allegations involving him and his wife
Colombian President Gustavo Petro also weighed in on the matter via his official X account, calling for action from authorities. He posted: “Is this true? Disciplinary and criminal authorities must provide us with information,” alongside photos of Callejas and Jaramillo.
Hours after the controversy erupted on Saturday, Callejas resigned from his position at the Medellín Lottery.
