Mendoza, Argentina, launches betting-related financial education initiative for teenagers

Key Points
- Mendoza, Argentina, has launched a financial education program targeting youth amid rising online betting
- The initiative was developed in partnership with Supervielle Bank
- The goal is to expand the program’s reach and involve more private organizations in the future
The Government in Mendoza, Argentina, has partnered up with Supervielle Bank to promote and reinforce financial education in schools, amid the growth of the online betting industry among teenagers.
The initiative, launched at the César Casiva School in Las Heras, includes scholarships for students to access an interactive platform featuring content on saving, safe internet use, fraud prevention and basic investment concepts. The training combines virtual classes with in-person sessions and is part of the Digital Citizenship program, which the Ministry of Education promotes.
The Government says the initiative coincides with rising concerns about how easily young people can access online gambling.
During a visit to Mendoza, Spanish psychologist and addiction specialist Mariano Chóliz noted that Argentina appears to be following a pattern similar to Spain’s: initial regulation was followed by rapid market expansion, and by the time the associated risks were recognized, reversing the trend had become difficult.
Good to know: Gambling regulations have been on the agenda in Argentina. Recently, the province of Salta has restricted casino access for child support debtors
Minister Tadeo Gardía Zalazar said: “Financial education is not just technical knowledge, but a tool for autonomy, responsible decision-making, and building life projects. That’s why the State must ensure that all our students, regardless of their background, have access to these opportunities.”
Representatives from Supervielle Bank also emphasized the importance of reaching young people with this knowledge beyond public schools, where it was initially launched, aiming at a wider audience like private-sector companies.
