- They would also be restricted from entering sports events
- The bill is yet to be approved by the Senate
The Chamber of Deputies in the province of Salta, Argentina, has approved a bill aimed at restricting access to casinos for individuals who are behind on alimony payments.
The initiative establishes new restrictions on those who fail to comply with their child support obligations, with the aim, according to bill promoter Socorro Villamayor, of more effectively protecting the rights of children and adolescents.
Besides, those in debt will have the entrance to sports events and massive cultural events prohibited.
Villamayor stated, “The measure applies to those listed in the registry for at least three consecutive months or five non-consecutive months of noncompliance. By limiting access to these activities, the aim is to create a persuasive mechanism to encourage compliance with child support obligations.”
In addition, she emphasized that implementing this measure would not require significant technological changes, since both casinos and stadiums currently require ID verification. This would allow for an easy check of each person’s status.
Good to know: Argentina has been moving forward in protecting its youth from online gambling addiction. Recently, the city of Mar del Plata implemented restrictions on underage access to gambling platforms
According to Mónica Juárez, President of the Commission on Women, Gender, Diversity, Children, Adolescents and Family, there are currently 1,200 individuals registered as being in arrears on child support in Salta.
She said: “If someone fails to meet their most basic responsibility, such as supporting their child, it’s hard to justify that they should freely take part in recreational activities while the other party struggles to cover essential needs.”
The bill still requires approval from the Chamber of Senators, though a date for the vote has not yet been set.
