Brazil senate orders influencer who owns betting company to testify
Senate’s betting inquiry approves new measures after no-show from influencer and business
Key Points
- Brazilian Senate committee approves coercive summons of MarjoSports owner for missing testimony
- Jonbet owner also didn’t show, generating skepticism from the Senators
- Influencer allegedly involved with Blaze and under investigation for promoting illegal betting platforms
The Brazilian Senate’s Parliamentary Inquiry Commission, also known as CPI das Bets, has approved measures against digital influencer Luan Kovarik, also known as Jon Vlogs, owner of betting platform Jonbet, and businessman Jorge Barbosa Dias, owner of MarjoSports, after both failed to appear for scheduled testimony.
Senator Dr. Hiran, who chairs the committee, confirmed that both men will now face coercive summons, a legal tool that allows authorities to compel individuals to appear. Kovarik had informed the committee that he was abroad, but senators expressed skepticism, calling his absence a deliberate act of avoidance.
Hiran pointed to alleged ties between him and Blaze, the betting platform that is described by senators as the largest operator of influencer marketing in Brazil. “This is not a mere inconvenience,” Hiran said. “It is a show of contempt for this commission.”
Good to know: The case adds to growing public scrutiny, as Brazilian consumers have filed over 1,100 lawsuits against betting operators since 2022
The latest developments intensify the pressure on the CPI to extend its mandate. Senators like Izalci Lucas urged the Senate to consider a second extension of the inquiry. “It would be irresponsible for us to close this investigation without hearing from this influencer,” he stated.
The CPI’s deadline is currently set for June 14, but can be extended through a request signed by at least one-third of the Senate.
