Senator calls for further extension of Brazil’s betting inquiry

Key Points
- Senator has called for another extension
- The inquiry has already been extended once and is currently set to end on 14 June
Senator Izalci Lucas has called on Brazil’s Senate to approve a second extension of the CPI das Apostas Esportivas, also known as the CPI das Bets.
The CPIA das Bets is a parliamentary inquiry investigating betting platforms, unregulated advertising practices and aiming to improve the regulated market.
During a speech in plenary, Lucas argued that more time is needed to complete the final report responsibly, noting that several key witnesses have yet to be heard. One of them is a digital influencer who owns a betting platform, and, after reportedly making accusations involving the President, failed to appear before the committee as scheduled.
The Inquiry has already been extended by 45 days and is currently set to conclude on 14 June. “If the goal is truly to investigate and improve legislation, we will need a little more time,” Senator Lucas stated.
Earlier this month, the CPI expanded its focus to include the role of influencers and other sectors such as the sports industry in promoting betting platforms without proper disclaimers or oversight, a move that followed the Senate’s formal approval of coercive measures against some non-compliant figures.
Good to know: Brazil’s efforts to become a more regulated market comes with regulatory actions, such as the recent certification of Risk Cherry as a compliance body
The senator’s push for more time underscores the growing political pressure to tighten oversight of Brazil’s betting industry before the inquiry concludes.
