New York posts $23.94bn sports wagering handle for fiscal year 2024/25

The New York State Gaming Commission (NYGC) has posted a $2.44bn sports wagering handle for the month of March – marking the end of fiscal year 2024/25 and bringing the state’s total figure for the year up to $23.94bn.  

Indeed, the state’s latest monthly figures from March 2025 represent the second-highest sports wagering handle of the fiscal year – more than likely attributable to high sports betting engagement driven by March Madness.

The $2.44bn wagering handle reported by the NYGC for March is representative of a 14.9% year-over-year increase – and was outpaced only by the $2.48bn handle posted in January, making it the second highest monthly betting handle posted in the US.  

Elsewhere, GGR figures reached $161.8m for the month, falling by 3.1% year-over-year and 13.3% month-over-month. DraftKings was the state’s primary revenue driver for the month, generating $62.6m in GGR from a total $912.1m handle. The operator was closely trailed by FanDuel, who posted a GGR figure of $59.45m from a total handle of $862.2m. 

Interestingly, FanDuel’s GGR figure represents a downturn from the $82.9m posted in March 2024, with DraftKings’ growing by 18.9%.  

Fiscal year 2024/25 

With regard to the whole fiscal year 2024/25, the state of New York’s accumulated wagering handle has exceeded the $19.64bn posted for the prior year by 21.9% – making it the largest fiscal year sports wagering handle in US state history. Overall state GGR for the year also grew by 15.4% year-over-year to a figure of $2.14bn. 

In juxtaposition to the results from March, FanDuel led the way over the course of the full year, posting an overall $9.2bn wagering handle – up by $1bn in comparison to the year prior. This figure paired with a GGR increase of 12.5% year-over-year, settling at a total of $969.8m for the operator. DraftKings was close behind, increasing its betting handle by $1.5bn year-over-year to $8.6bn and posting an overall GGR of $727.9m, representing growth of 15.6% compared to the previous fiscal year.  

Good to know: During March, New York legislators voted unanimously to pass a bill prohibiting sweepstakes casinos in the state 

Elsewhere, earlier this week, The New York City Planning Commission voted to advance a Wynn’s Hudson Yard casino development project, despite fierce opposition from a number of local community board members and Manhattan Borough President, Mark Levine.
