Key Points

The Virginia Lottery has launched a new public service announcement (PSA) in support of Problem Gambling Awareness Month, which focuses on the importance of knowing one’s limits and not playing beyond one’s means.
Titled “Gym,” the PSA is part of the Lottery’s efforts to raise awareness about problem gambling and support healthy habits for those 18-and-older who choose to gamble.
“At the Virginia Lottery, we want to remove the stigma around gambling and put a focus on promoting responsible play,” Virginia Lottery Executive Director Khalid Jones said.
“National Problem Gambling Awareness Month provides us with an opportunity to highlight resources available to Virginians who might need support in how they engage with this form of entertainment. Our goal is to encourage healthy, informed choices among Virginians who choose to gamble.”
The Virginia Lottery also administers the state’s Voluntary Exclusion Program, which allows residents to exclude themselves from participating in certain legalized gambling. The program applies to certain offerings whether each is regulated by the Virginia Lottery, the Virginia Office of Charitable and Regulatory Programs or the Virginia Racing Commission.

“As online and mobile gambling become more accessible, recognizing the signs of problem gambling is more critical than ever. Anyone can be affected, and ensuring immediate access to support is essential,” Virginia Council on Problem Gambling President Dr. Carolyn Hawley said.
A portion of the tax revenue from Lottery-regulated gaming entities, such as sports betting and casinos, is directed to the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund, which provides ongoing financial support for problem gambling in the Commonwealth.
