Fecoljuegos says ‘no’ to new digital betting taxes

The union claims operators could suspend their activities otherwise.
Key Points
- The tax would be 19% on digital gaming platforms
- The union says that the decision was made without considering the sector’s functioning
Gambling companies’ guild Fecoljuegos has voiced its opposition to new taxes on digital betting, which would impose a 19% VAT tax on these platforms.
The new tax aims to raise resources for Catatumbo.
However, Fecoljuegos stated that a transition is needed. The group noted that without a transition, “operators could partially or totally suspend their activities, with serious economic and social consequences.”
In an interview with La W Radio, the union went on to say, “A decision has been made without considering the functioning of the sector or the technical challenges involved in its implementation.
“Without a transition period, operators will face serious difficulties in complying with the new requirements.”
In addition to voicing its opposition, Fecoljuegos asked the Government of Gustavo Petro to reconsider its move to implement the tax, claiming that “”its implementation puts the stability of the sector at risk.”
In related news, two US Representatives have reintroduced legislation that would repeal the “handle tax,” which requires that a .25% excise tax be placed on all legal sports wagers.
Nevada Representative Dina Titus of Pennsylvania Representative Guy Reschenthaler serve as co-chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Gaming Caucus and put the proposed legislation before lawmakers this week. They have named this legislation “The Discriminatory Gaming Tax Repeal Act of 2025.”
