Alabama Policy Institute expresses concern over legalized gambling via new website

Key Points
- Lawmakers are scheduled to reconvene next week for legislative session
- Supporters and opponents have expressed their views online
The Alabama Policy Institute (API) recently debuted a new website in response to legislative discussion on statewide expanded gambling.
The group said in a statement, “API has long been an opponent of the expansion of gambling because the proposals violate all three pillars of our mission to promote free markets, limited government and strong families.
“The expansion of gambling is one of the few issues that violates each of the pillars.”
However, this could change if lawmakers decide to consider opening the state for legalized gambling. Alabama legislators are scheduled to reconvene next week.
API said it believes gambling expansion is not the best interest of Alabama residents.
The organization commented, “In a state where we are striving to keep up with the mental health needs of our population, it is irresponsible and frankly disingenuous for state lawmakers to create, condone, and encourage additional addictive behavior while claiming to advocate for those struggling with mental health issues.”
Supporters of pro-gambling laws have also presented their viewpoints online.
Good to know: Alabama currently has no legal gambling markets
A social media page called Give Alabama a Voice has petitioned Alabama residents to “Tell Montgomery YOU want the chance to vote on an Alabama Lottery!”
The page also stated, “We’ve never been closer!!! Here in 2025, we have the momentum to vote on an Alabama Lottery, giving YOU the chance to participate in billions of dollars in lottery winnings. PLUS, Alabama gets to keep its share of the lottery revenue we are currently giving away to other surrounding states. This money will help our schoolchildren and build roads without additional taxes.”
Alabama Senator Sam Givhan recently shared with local news during a radio interview that he is not confident the state will approve a lottery and gambling package next year.
