North Dakota lawmakers consider bill to dissolve state gaming commission

Key Points
- Those in the gambling industry voiced concerns that this would give the Attorney General too much authority
- Supporters have called the benefits of a state commission into question
A bill in North Dakota is on the table that could give the Attorney General’s Office the power to regulate all statewide gambling, according to a Bismark Tribune local news report.
In turn, this proposed legislation, Senate Bill 2224, would dissolve the state’s gaming commission and “seek to streamline the gambling regulation process.”
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a “do-pass recommendation” on the bill by a vote of 4-3.
Senator Janne Myrdal, who sponsored SB 2224, said in the committee, “Governor Armstrong mentioned all the boards and commissions and things that we have in our state, and how we need to look at which ones are pivotal for the functioning of our government and which ones are not.
“This came to me from some concerned entities that felt like this particular commission in its duties – which they faithfully execute, obviously – is really a step that we can eliminate in the gaming industry.”
According to the local report, several state lawmakers have questioned the benefits of having the commission in place.
However, the gaming industry has pushed back against the bill with claims that a law like this one “would remove key checks on the Attorney General’s power.”
In related news, lawmakers in North Dakota recently said no to another attempt to bring legal online sports wagering to the state, according to a recent North Dakota Monitor news report.
The resolution went before the North Dakota House of Representatives and was struck down by a vote of 63-24.
Several legislators voiced concerns over “the detrimental effects of gambling.”
Representative Scott Louser told local news that he had “hoped to stave off a citizen-initiated measure on legalizing online sports betting with a resolution that would have put the issue up to a statewide vote.”
