North Dakota lawmakers reject online sports betting resolution

Key Points
- Opponents raised concerns over potential ‘detrimental effects’
- If this had passed, this would have gone before voters in November 2026
Lawmakers in North Dakota have said no to another attempt to bring legal online sports wagering to the state, according to a recent North Dakota Monitor news report.
The resolution went before the North Dakota House of Representatives and was struck down by a vote of 63-24.
Several legislators voiced concerns over “the detrimental effects of gambling.”
Representative Scott Louser told local news that he had “hoped to stave off a citizen-initiated measure on legalizing online sports betting with a resolution that would have put the issue up to a statewide vote.”
The bill, House Concurrent Resolution 3002, contained some differences from a previous online sports betting bill that had failed to pass during the 2023 legislative session.
One difference was that this proposal designated that sports betting revenue would go to support the K-12 public school system.
Under the terms of this bill, the matter of whether to allow statewide sports betting would have been put to a statewide vote during the November 2026 election.
In related news, North Dakota legislators are considering a bill that could limit which organizations are permitted to conduct charitable gaming, according to a KVRR local news report.
Electronic pull tab machine installations around the state have prompted legal discussion, the local report said. As the end of December, the number of these machines has reached close to 5,250, spread out across 846 sites statewide.
These pull tab machines are similar to slots.
As a result, Senate Bill 2035 is on the table for state lawmakers and defines what would qualify as a “public spirited organization.”
Only establishments that qualify would be allowed to conduct gambling should this bill pass in North Dakota.
