AI scams target River Cree Resort & Casino

Key Points
- The resort said it is not the only North American casino targeted
- River Cree Resort & Casino is working with local regulators to raise awareness
The River Cree Resort & Casino in Alberta was recently the target of false ads generated by AI, according to an Edmonton CityNews local report.
Baily Nitti, a former journalist with CityNews, reported that she has been targeted by an AI scam using her image from an older report as part of the ad.
“To see yourself on that, being used in a way where your voice is saying something you never said is scary,” she told local news.
River Cree Resort and Casino Vik Mahajan responded to the incident by saying, “It’s not just us, it’s other big brands. It always leaves a bad taste in the person’s mouth who ends up using that, and we don’t want our name to be out there in these frauds and fakes ads.”
In response to the fraudulent AI activity, the resort has teamed up with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) in an effort to inform and educate the public.
In other local news, Alberta’s Camrose Casino said it still plans to move its destination to Edmonton despite recent financial trouble, according to a CBC News report.
Mayfield Investments Ltd. currently owns the destination and runs it through its Camrose Casino Corp. company.
The company was previously denied its bid last year to relocate. The Camrose Casino wants to relocate its facility to 420 Parsons Road, the local report said.
After AGLC denied the previous application, the company submitted another pitch, which outlined plans for an 88,000 square-foot venue that would be home to 498 slot machines and 25 table games.
After conducting a review and opening the floor for public debate, the group recently received the go-ahead to relocate the facility from AGLC.
